How To Find The Perfect Sunscreen
It’s 2022 and if you still skip your sunscreen then you don’t wanna skip this blogpost. Sunscreen is extremely crucial, not only for ‘aesthetic’ purposes because it prevents the sun rays from being absorbed into your skin which could cause skin discoloration, early wrinkles, aging and worse, UV rays could potentially cause skin cancer.
There are a lot of sunscreens in the market and it can get pretty overwhelming to choose from. If you’re new in the sunscreen game, you might be familiar with the typical sunscreen that you used before going to the beach. But that might not be the perfect choice for your face as it’s too thick for your skin and it could block your pores that will trigger breakouts.
#1 Choose Your Sunscreen Type
Do you know that there are three kinds of sunscreens in the market? Wait, what? Yup, there are 3 sunscreen types: physical, chemical and hybrid. Physical sunscreens are those that you lather before dipping in the sea. They’re made of mineral actives such as zinc oxide and/or titanium oxide. Physical sunscreens are thicker in consistency and they also leave a white cast behind, simply because physical sunscreen sits on top of the skin to block the UV rays off your skin.
This is a different case for chemical sunscreens. Chemical sunscreens are made of chemical actives that consist of organic compounds and they do not leave any white cast because it penetrates into the skin as it works to absorb the UV rays into the skin, and convert them to heat before being released by the skin.
What in the world is a hybrid sunscreen? It gives you the best of both worlds! It has the texture of a chemical sunscreen with the mineral filter of a physical sunscreen so you can get the maximum protection minus the pesky white cast that you often get from physical sunscreens.
#2 Choose The Suitable Consistency For Your Skin
Do you have oily skin? If you do, try to avoid thick sunscreens and opt for the lightweight ones to allow your skin to breathe. For those with dry skin, it’s best to choose those with hydrating ingredients. If you have normal skin, any sunscreens could work for you, all you need to do is choose yours!
#3 Choose The Right SPF Level
SPF level is important in choosing the right sunscreen because SPF means Sun Protection Factor and the higher the level of SPF, the higher the level of protection the sunscreen provides against UVB rays. Experts recommend that you opt for sunscreens that have a SPF30 or higher. It’s even better if it’s a broad spectrum sunscreen because it protects your skin from two kinds of UV rays: Ultraviolet A (associated with skin aging) and Ultraviolet B (associated with skin burning). To note, broad spectrum and PA (Protection Grade of UVA) are the same, just different terms. So if you see a sunscreen with SPF30 PA+++, you’re good to go because it shields your skin against both UVA and UVB rays!
